THE IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY
The biggest challenge within companies.
Currently, among the most important aspects proposed by leadership research, four stand out as fundamental for a leader to develop high-performance teams:
The ability to deal with “very different people”, learning to recognize, understand and value different professional styles.
Self-awareness to recognize innate talents and understand the positive and negative impacts your own behaviours cause on others.
The ability to work in a participative and collaborative fashion.
The ability to influence and engage professionals.
Diversity, for example, is one of the greatest challenges for leaders. While they recognize the importance of diversity, many in practice prefer to hire people like them. It is common to sympathize with people with whom we have affinity, complement us or we admire, and on the other hand we dislike those who are very different from us. Entrepreneurs are bothered with Social types, who bother with Organizational Managers, who bother for example with Innovators.
The fact is that leadership research demonstrates that every leader divides his team into an in-group and an out-group often unconsciously. This attitude generates, demotivation, loss of productivity and problems of absenteeism, which is verified by all of us in the day to day of the organizations.
On the other hand, University of Michigan Economist Scott Page has found that diverse teams respond better to complex issues than homogeneous groups even though individuals and homogeneous groups are more talented.
The power of diversity is confirmed by a survey conducted by Deloitte in 2012 with companies from various sectors, showed that the inclusion of diversity of professionals increased team productivity by up to 42%, as well as reduced the level of absenteeism.
